3 Ways to Develop New Ideas

method 1: STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST

popularised by Austin Kleon, the concept of stealing like an artist acknowledges that there are no truly original stories left to tell and instead celebrates the power of influence.

by intentionally allowing ourselves to be influenced by stories and other forms of art, we learn to shape and transform those influences into unique new works. So, how do we steal like an artist to brainstorm new story ideas? simple!

set aside a block of time to create a list of artistic influences. think about the stories you've most enjoyed and what it was about those stories that captivated your attention. Was it a certain character or theme? plot twist or magic system? a breath-taking setting?

1.So what- Miles Davies: his tone and melodies that he conveys in his music

2.Watermelon man- Herbie Hancock: the progressive adding of different tracks gradually through the intro of this song creates an atmosphere different to any other artist

3.It runs through me- Tom Misch: his ability to improvise as a jazz guitarist and a vocalist influence me because it makes me want to create the same atmosphere in my music.

4.Michael Morpurgo - butterfly lion: this is the first story that I actually understood internally, and every time i picked up this book to read it as a child i felt as though I was the kid and i could completely picture every word that i was reading.

work your themes down to their fundamentals and them build from them with your own ideas

Method 2: THE QUESTION GAME

At the heart of story telling their is the question "what if"

What if there was a school that raised the ruling members of society.

what if there was an undiscovered creature out there that was never found in historical research because it still exists.

what if global warming got extremely dangerous overnight.

what if life was an assimilation.

Method : THE EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER

Readers must invest in your story emotionally if they are to care about the journey at hand. And if it's emotion that hooks readers into your story, it's no wonder that playing with emotions can be a powerful way to generate ideas for your next novel.
