"The BBFC and Film Certificates"

What is the BBFC?

BBFC stands for The British Board of Film Classification. They are an independent, non- governmental, non-profit, co-regulatory body.

What do they do?
The BBFC classify commercials, all types of video works, films, trailer and advertisements. They ensure to consider that all of these are following the guidelines that they have applied to make sure that the content that is being provided is being directed towards the correct audience and that the content that has been created is following the classification guidelines for each age restricted category. They will make an assessment of each and every single form of cinema advertisement, feature films, trailers, public information films and charity campaigns and they will take full responsibility to ensure that these have all been classified.

what do they consider when awarding certificates?

- Context
- Theme
- Tone and Impact
- Dangerous behaviour
- Discrimination
- Drugs
- Language
- Nudity
- Sex
- Sexual violence and sexual threat
- Threat and Horror
- Violence

What a film can or cannot include for certain age categories

PG
Whats this means is that parental guidance is advised. If a film has been placed in this category it means that the film should not be unsettling for a child aged around eight or older to watch.

12A
Whats this means is that no one younger than 12 may enter the cinema unless they are accompanied by an adult. However, the adult should always check and make sure that they are happy with taking the child to film incase any the film contains any content that they would rather their child avoids.

15
What this means is that no one younger than the age of 15 may see a 15 rated film in cinema and they must not rent or buy any 15 rated video work. This rating is quite the step up from 12/12A as a lot of the classifications begin to ease slightly as the film is advised for a mature audience.

18
What this means is that no one younger than the age of 18 may see an 18 rated film in the cinema. 18 years old may rent or buy an 18 rated video work but no one younger. 18 rated video works have the eligibility to have material that would not be suitable for any one younger. The restrictions are less stringent as the audience is much more matured.

What certificate do I think my coursework groups idea should be given.

I feel as though my coursework group's idea could either be a 12A or a 15. The main reason as to why I say this is because there might be some dialogue that could potentially consist of some strong language. This is because whilst all the players are on the pitch we may find good reasoning to include such language to develop the atmosphere on the pitch to convey to the audience how intense the football match actually is.

Reasearch and Planning

CHARACTER LIST:

We would need around 11 football players. However, there needs to be a range of ages in this team because there is a wide range of player who are starting there careers and player who are finishing their careers

We would also need a slightly older male character to act as the coach

We also need a referee

Possibly a commentator

With this opening title sequence it is undecided as to whether there are necessarily going to be any main characters. This is because this sequence is going to predominantly be based during the match and we do not know which footballer we are going to be able to use in our shoot.

SOUND IN FILM

The two most important types of sound:

Diegetic Sound:

This is sound which is part of the film that we are watch. It can range from dialogue, music or sound effects which come from a source that is within the film itself. This source in the film which we are acknowledging could be an object. For example, a CD player or a jukebox.

diegetic sound can be heard either on screen or off screen. For instance, we can either see the person or object that is making the sound or we don't meaning that the sound would be off screen.

Non-Diegetic sound:

This is sound which is added in the post production of the film which we do not recognise as part of the film. For example, a voice over or background music.

It is used to create a mood or atmosphere to add more information to the images presented.

Different Layers of Sound

-Ambient sound

-dialogue

-Music - Non diegetic (mood) Diegetic (ambient sound)

- Foley sound (sound effects) help with dialogue

-Voice over (either diegetic or non- diegetic) most voice overs are non-diegetic added in post production

The Master Scene Method

In todays we were taught about the master scene method.

This consists of two shot types that should be cut back and forth. the first shot needs to be a wide shot (Master) where the subject is being shown and allows for the audience to see from a further perspective in order to establish what is about to happen. Then you must use a number of different close up shots. The close up shots will be a key component in this scene as they are going to allow the audience to see what is going on from multiple angles.

WHAT IS A STORY BOARD

Story boarding is when you draw an image of the shots that you want to film.

Why is it important:

Before Production:

- It will allow you to plan out and organise your filming

- Allows you to try things and consider each shot while you’re not wasting time on set.

- drawing a story board will allow you and your group to visualise what is going to happen

- You will have the ability to actually see what will work and what won't

After Production:

- each member of the group when editing will notice which shots should piece together well

What should be included:

-  labelled shot numbers. ( understand the order)

- The location allowing you to identify and locate each location

- The action (so that everyone can read out what is going to happen)

- Sound (dialog)

- lighting ( can be presented by shading)

- transitions ( written so that everyone can visually identify how it will continue)

- timing (duration)

Group meeting (the start of our idea planning)

In todays lesson we were told to discuss our ideas in more depth and detail. In our group we began to discuss how we would like for our title sequence to begin. For example, we spoke about wether we would like the opening shot to be.

so we made a brief idea of what we envision the start of our plan to be :

- running onto the pitch after half time

-close up of the ref blowing the whistle

-the ball is then passed from the centre

-someone then runs with the ball with a close up of their legs

-tracking side shot, tight shot of the player tackling the opposition and running through

- the camera should then follow the ball until it is passed out of the shot.

- the ball will then re-enter the shot however it is then going to be training when it re-enters.

-someone then takes a touch with their chest

-we then see two guys at the pitch at training the player who has just received the ball tries to pass/shoot and totally misses.

-we then see a small amount of passive aggressiveness from the player

-the couch then calls all of them in to do a dribbling drill where they are running through cones.

-it cuts upon action from the cones to the match itself where they are doing the same skills.

-the player then goes for a slide tackle.

whilst he is on the floor we a see a POV of him on the floor.

-starts to get up, glances over at the edge of the pitch.
