Prelim task story board

In class we were given an exercise in which we had to follow a comic script and try to convey this by creating a short film story based upon the shots and the dialogue that were presented by the images we were given.

We worked in groups of three, making a decision that one person was going to be filming and that we would have the other two members of the group try to act out based on the resources that we were given. We made a mutual agreement that we would base it on a teacher trying to make sure that a student is getting their work done. We ended up shooting the scene from the different angles that we were given on the sheet and then we decided that we were going to shoot the whole scene from the students perspective and then the whole scene from the teachers perspective. I feel as though we did well but the shots that we ended up using in the final edit were not suited with one another. What I mean by this is that the actors did not appear to be in the same position or appear to be acting the same (facial expressions). In conclusion i feel as though we should have ensured that we tried to act the same throughout those different shots and then ensured that we could all together as a group make a decision upon which shots suit the characters perspectives best.

I feel like I know now that next time when i work in a group i should ensure to consult the rest of them and gather everyones opinion upon which shots should suit what we are shooting best as i feel like the it is important that everyone in the group is open to communicate with one another and share what they each have to say.

'Sexy Beast' analysis

The opening scene begins with a still framed shot pointing towards the sun. In this shot alone you can see that there are no clouds in sight showing us that the setting that this scene is based in has a warm climate. Sound wise there has most likely been non diegetic sounds of crickets and the occasional birds added in the post production to emphasise the setting that this shot is in but also to make it appear as though he can hear these sounds as-well . As the shot continues dialogue is brought in. This shows the audience that there is a character which is shortly presented by a birds eye view establishing what appears to be the main character lying in a sun chair for a long duration . However, the character that is being presented has a very thick cockney accent. This comes across as unusual due to the fact that his accent represents that he is from a working class background meaning that because of the setting he is in. There is a high possibility that he is involved with crime.

The shot  then cuts to a tracking shot with a long duration from the characters right hand side in which a fairly up beat song is played. Which then cuts upon movement/action to his other side presenting the audience with a second character (young boy). The main character can be seen taking up the majority of the left hand side of the frame whilst the young boy is only occupying the bottom left and side of the frame. The audiences attention is easily drawn from the main character as he is soon to be facing the young boy making the audiences attention move from the left hand side of the frame to left not only establishing the presence of the second character but also slightly establishing more of the setting that this scene is based in. This is soon followed up by short duration close up matching the dialogue in conversation showing the facial expressions of both of the character. For example, slight confusion int eh young boys face and the stubbornness of the main characters face. However, it is clear to see that there is most definitely some sort of banter between the two of them as young boy clearly can make fun of the instructions that the main character is trying to give him.

As the main character decides to proceed with whatever it was exactly that he was doing. The camera cuts once again upon his actions to a close up of him grabbing his iced towel to then repeat once again the previous birds eye view shot of him lying back down in the sun chair. The use of using the same birds eye view camera angle shows that he is going back into the same position. However, as soon as the birds eye view changes to a different angle. The main character is presented on the left hand side of the frame drawing the audience towards the graphic inside of the swimming pool. This graphic of two love hearts represents a possibility of there being a possible woman which is most likely to appear later on after the opening scene. Yet, the fact that there are these two hearts in the pool shows that the house that he is currently accommodating himself too is most likely owned by this woman.

The birds eye view is later on cut to a long distance shot establishing the scenery and the location giving the audience a view of the entire household. However, the duration of this shot is really short, quickly leading on to a close up to the main character’s face in which it is showing off the expensive accessories that the main character is wearing. This represents that the character has made some form of social mobility into a higher paying lifestyle. As the dialogue between him and the young boy ends the camera switches to another tracking shot in which the title of the movie is presented. The camera is stationary but tracks his movements as he begins to walk towards the pool and admire the setting that he is. This could possible correlate with the fact that he does not live there. Primarily, due the fact that someone who owns the place would most likely be familiar with where they are living and would consider everything going on around the house(eg.nature) to be normal. You can clearly see this because of the long shot duration allowing us to see the character every movement and everywhere that he is looking. However, in a way this can come across very suspicious. This is because of the fact that you get can get a slight sense that there is a possibility that someone is looking for him or that something is bound to happen to him sometime soon.

'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' Opening Scene analysis

From the very beginning of the opening scene it is clear that this movie is science fiction based. the entirety of this opening scene is all one shot. The effect that this has on the audience is that they are engaged with everything that is going on within the shot as they feel as though they are being brought along with everything that groot is experiencing in that scene. Yet what the director has decided to do in this opening sequence is introduce all of the character. The characters aren't introduced by what they are necessarily saying but for some of them it is how they are acting and fighting. It becomes visually apparent that baby groot is holding onto the lead for the monitors, giving the audience the interpretation that music is about to be queued in. Yet it is in this moment where you start to understand a little bit about the first character (baby groot). We are able to analyse that baby groot at the moment is slightly useless. Not only because he isn't involved with the fighting going on behind him but because of the fact that he even slightly struggled to connect the male and female ends of the cords together. As the tracking shot follows baby groot you are sooner or later introduced to each and every one of the characters that are fighting in the background.

The method that they have used to film this entire scene is placing a camera either on a dolly or on a track so that they were able to gain a tracking shot that follows baby groot all around the science fiction set that they have created with green screening and CGI effects. However, for the characters to be able to leave the frame in certain ways or to be flying around in the background it would most likely be that they were wearing harnesses so that they could attach themselves to wires so that their movement could be controlled in the green screen set to fit exactly what the director wanted the to be doing in the backgroudn baby groot.

This is a controversial point because of the music that is being played as baby groot eventually plugs in the two cables. The reason for this is because some people might say that the music is contrapuntal to what is going on behind baby groot. However, knowing Peter Quill from the previous guardians of the galaxy. He is the kind of guy to bring along his music to a fight. In the background you can hear all sorts of sound effects ranging from the space monster that they are trying to kill to the sound of sci-fi guns being fired. However, even though all of the fighting that is going on behind baby groot is not in focus. You can still see enough to acknowledge the fact that the sound of gun fire is in fact parallel with all of the gunfire that can see in the background along with any of the special effects going on.

As a sixteen year old I recommend this movie to anyone who has an interest in movies with great sound tracks, amazing science fiction visuals, comedy and action. But to truly understand this film i recommend watching the first one.

Sound

 SOUND

Sound bridges:

Sound bridges are what are commonly used to lead in or out of a scene. Regularly used for transition in the continuity editing style

Pleonastic sound:

Pleonastic sound is when any type of sound of sound effect is emphasised in order to make the sound more evident to the audience. For example, in post production if you were to want to make the sound of someones footsteps appear to be more evident you could higher the volume so that the sound is exaggerated to the audiences hearing.

Parallel sound:

Parallel sound is when the sound that you are hearing is corresponding with either the actions that are about to happen or that are currently are happening. For example, in a comedy movie the character has just made a funny remark and then decides to leave the scene and throughout this entire scene there as been a progressive build up in up beat music to the point where the music reaches a climax and the character walks out.

Contrapuntal sound:

Contrapuntal sound is when the music that can be heard does not correlate along with what is going on within the scene. Not only does this make the audience questioning what is going on but it leaves a feeling of uncertainty and bemused.

'Saving Private Ryan' muted sound guessing:

waves crashing

men shouting

metal clinging against metal

wind

possible non-diegetic throwing up

aggressive dialogue

heavy breathing

gun shots hitting the metal

explosions

sound of bullets making contact with bodies & equipment

sound of bullets piercing water

sound of men drowning

bullets ricochetting off of equipment

Artillery footsteps

bombs and explosions

men screaming

possible high pitch ringing

'The Shining' analysis

 ‘The Shining’ analysis:

The opening sequence has a large amount of different shots. The majority of them have a long duration all with the sam camera work. The camera work throughout the opening sequence is air born. However, it is not steady giving the audience a sense of instability. The director has chosen to use a dutch angle in a few of the shots. What this does is it shows the audience an angle that is not level which makes the audience feel off balance as though something is not right which brings more attention to the car in this scene.

There are some elements of birds eye view which are isolating the character who is driving the car as it gives the audience a perspective that shows the car alienated away from any other sort of society as the car is seen driving in the middle of nowhere. This is presented in every single one of this shot in the opening scene. However the opening shot is the angle that establishes the location that the character is in. The opening shot consists of an airborne fly by which has random motion giving the viewer a perspective as where the character currently is as well as making them feel a sense of uncertainty with the unstable camera angles.
