Continuing with Editing

In today's lesson I started to create the soundtrack for our opening title sequence. I asked everyone in the group what kind of soundtrack they thought would best suite our sequence and they all said that we should go for a 'classic British rock kind of vibe' and so thats what I am going to try and achieve.

Apart from starting to compose the soundtrack we also did some more editing. We began to see what order we were going to put different shots in and started edit together these shots in a way that will show the genre of the film. We did this by having some shots of the players seeming quite relaxed and casual about the match but then by showing some shots that show individual skill to show that this team actually does have potential.

History of opening titles and credits research

Titles can tell a lot about a film, from the style, genre even hints at the narrative.

While originally they were used simply to give across key institutional information

For example,

Both of these titles are crediting the most important institutional information to the audience.

They eventually moved on to their own art style, more noticeably in the works of Soul Bass:

However by looking at these different titles you can see how his work has inspired others:
For example, 'kiss kiss bang bang' which was drawn by Danny Yount
And some others that Saul Bass has clearly inspired :

From this while amh films still follow the simplistic style of key information there are those that use them creatively, as discussed in nerd writers video:

Studio logos themselves have changed over time, usually as a reflection of both technological advancements as well as reflecting mile stones in the companies history:

For example, Universal Studios( in chromatic order, skipping a few because there are so many):

I then looked at films with similar conventions to my own:

Video 1:

Video 2:

Video 3:

Whilst there are different styles, as well as different sports, the main common themes running throughout are:

- Non-diegetic soundtrack (uplifting/motivational music)

- Voice overs

- Character introduction

-  Scenic camera work

From this I know we will have to try an incorporate a similar energy into our opening title sequence. I feel as though one of the main ways to do this is by putting together a sound track that will compliment the footage that is going to be edited together and using pleonastic sound to emphasise the actions to make them more evident to our audience.

Starting to Edit

In today media lesson we started editing. It turned out that we have 106 total shots of footage in which me have to pick out which shots we think would be best for our opening title sequence.

Some of our shots had flaws meaning that we had to think as to how we could work around them, whether that’s us cropping out some of the shots because the camera was moving when we were hoping that it would be stable. Also some of the shots had a little bit too much exposure but later on we can edit them so that the shots blend together well.

What kind of media institution might distribute my media product

Today I did some research into different media institutions that might distribute our media product. I took a look at some different football films a then looked at what media companies then distributed them. One of the films i found is called Pelé, which is all about he rise of a character leading Brazil to its first world cup victory. In comparison where my film is about a small town underdog team making their way up to the champions league, so i thought that Pelé would be the perfect film to use for comparison.

- A good example of a film production and distribution company that would distribute our media product would be IFC films. They have predominantly released independent films. However, they have several ventures in video on demand. I feel as though it could be good to distribute through IFC films as when they released Pelé they achieved quite a good rating on IMDb. Considering the fact that both my film and Pelé are both about a process to victory, I do believe that IFC films could be a good possible media institution to work with.

- Another good example of a media institution that could be a good option for distributing our opening title sequence could be NETFLIX. NETFLIX is one of the biggest distributors. They work help distribute loads of small independent films as well as extremely well known production companies. For example, MARVEL or DC Comics. NETFLIX distribute their films globally and have a really good reputation for having a large amount of films. They have released a number of films that share some similar conventions with our opening title sequence idea. For example, Sunderland 'Til I Die, First Team Juventus, Golden Shoes and Becoming Champions.

- Sony Pictures is a subsidiary to Sony Entertainment. Meaning that by working through Sony Pictures, The process of distributing our media product would be able to be marketed on a very large scale due to the fact that Sony Pictures has a good reputation for the production and distribution of films. Sony Pictures have released a lot of films that have been given really good ratings. With this reputation they have quite the audience following their releases. For example, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage,  Ready Player One and Superbad. All of these films have exceptional budgets allowing for effective distribution of their media products.

Conclusion:

Out of all of these distributors I feel as though the best media institution to work with would be NETFLIX. The reasoning why I feel like this would be the best option is because of a number of factors. I think that because of the fact they have such a large following which is a total 204 million users. These users every-time they access NETFLIX are first shown all of their new releases as well as a number of different categories and sub categories that users can pick from in order to find  TV shows (series), Documentaries and films. NETFLIX also produce their own films as well as distribute other films from small and large film companies. With this in mind I think that they would be great to work with in order to promote our film to lots of people.

Shoot Day Evaluation

What Did I Do

The Morning:

- We went to the first shot location and cleared everything that was in the way of our opening shot.

- For the duration of all of these first shots i was holding the microphone and trying to get as close to the main character without getting in the shot.

- We then moved on to our next shot location which was in the woods.

- At first i was continuing to focus on sound but then soon after I took the role of working the camera for a few of the shots.

- I started off by trying to get some low angled shots of our main character running and jumping over a log which involved me getting down to the floor in order to achieve our desired shot.

- As soon as we were happy with our shot I though that we could possibly have a handheld shot tracking our main character running through the woods which meant that i had to run right behind him.
- Once I filmed these shots I alternated roles with the other members in my group and I helped direct what our main character should be doing next.

-We got a few more shots of the main character going for a run and then we decided that we had plenty of footage for this part of the opening title sequence.

The Afternoon:

- At 12:30 I gathered some of the people that were in the common room who we had previously arranged to take part in our sequence.

- As soon as we arrived at the football grounds we handed out the correct football kits to our actors/players. Half of them in stripes the other half in yellow.

- We started off by filming the final shot which is of a penalty. Which is actually going to be the final in the whole sequence. We thought it would be best to get it out of the way so that we don't have to worry about towards the end of the shoot.

-For this shot I basically instructed the goal keeper as well as the shot taker where they should shoot and where the keeper should dive in order to make it seem as realistic as possible.

-Then later on in the day I spent time just filming all of the players in their actual training session. However, what I did was I told half of them to wear yellow kit and the other half to wear the blue stripes so that when I was filming them it seemed as though they are all playing against one another in the match for the film.

By this point we had lots of footage and it was the end of our time at the pitch. But overall I think that we were all happy with all of the footage that we had gathered.

Who's Our Target Audience

When it comes down to trying to figure out who our target audience is we have to take a number of factors into account. The reason as to why I say this is because we need to understand who is actually going to engage with what we have created.

I did some research by going on IMDb to try and see what kind of an audience similar movies have attracted. For example, I looked into a film called 'Goal!'. This film is possibly one of the most similar films to what we vision our film being like. Therefore looking at the data that is provided should be helpful for us to figure out what kind of audience we are aiming to attract.

DEMOGRAPHICS

Gender- predominantly targeted towards men who have an interest in sports. However, there is clearly an interest to some women.

Age- roughly ages 18-44. But the age with the most interest is 30-44.

Nationality- United Kingdom (its a British football film).

Parental status- This is relevant because some of the older players in our film would most definitely have families in which there would then be more elements of drama to be included in the film.

Socio Economic Group:

Because of the fact that this is football film and football is the largest sport across the globe meaning that it has the greatest audience means that a football film like the one that I came up with, could draw multiple social classes attention. It is most likely that anywhere from working class to middle class possibly upper middle class would watch a film such as this one. The only reason as to why I feel as though the majority of those at the lowest level of subsistence might not is predominantly due to the fact that they might not be able to afford to attend cinemas whenever a movie they like has been released.

Psychographic Information (Personality types)

When it comes down to figuring what kind of people would watch this film we can refer to Young & Rubicam's table that they created in order to help them categories audiences based on their personalities, but first we need to acknowledge that the target audience for this film would be people who are into their sports, athletic and people with goals and aspirations.

By using Young & Rubicam's table they would most likely categorise our audience as being the Succeeder group. The reason why they would categorise them as the Succeeder. Primarily because 'their core need in life is for control', which I feel as though would suite and audience member perfectly because the football teams end goal is to try and have control above all of the other league teams. And the Succeeder seeks reward and prestige which is ultimately what all football teams seek.

Research into film role

In todays lesson we were set to research each role that we are going to take on, on our shoot day. I am going to explain the role of the camera person.

Camera person

What are you doing and why?

As the camera person I physically have full control of filming the entirety of the opening title sequence due to the fact that I decide when the camera is rolling and when the camera cuts.

What do you need to prepare before the shoot?

Before the shoot I need to make sure that the spirit level on the tripod is centred so that each shot is even and centred. Then I need to zoom in on the object or actor that is the main focus of the shot and then focus the shot in order to achieve maximum clarity.

What materials do you need to take with you?

I need a tripod, camera, lens, battery SD card, boom stick, microphone and an XLR cable.

Why is your role so important?

The reason as to why my role is so important is because without me there would be no way to record any of the acting for the opening title sequence or record in general.

Is there anything you can foresee that will possibly become challenging on your shoot day?

The main thing that may become an issue on our shoot day is the weather forecast. The reason why this mayo become an issue is because there is a fair chance of rain tomorrow meaning that our whole shoot may not work as initially planned.

How are you going to use/encourage the correct genre conventions are applied, and what are they?

Within every shot I am going to make sure that we pick up of actors emotions with a wide range of close ups to emphasise the character emotions as this opening title sequence is a drama.

Editor: by Georgia Cook

Initially I will be taking the role of editor. An editor's role on production day is to take the scenes in non-story order and begin to piece them together in my mind. It is important that I can see the bigger picture as we go along to realise the final product and envisage the emerging sense of story, suggesting extra shots that might add ambience or impact. Previous to the shoot, the editor works with the producer on the script and the shot list to understand what the vision is and how to achieve it. In terms of materials, it is important to have the shot list and storyboard to hand to reference and see how the real life shots compare and additions that must be made.

Editing is one of the most important jobs within the industry as it carries the role of blending together all of the rushes and sound to provoke an emotional response from the audience. Additionally, it determines the pace and atmosphere as you can have the exact same sequence but a long shot duration can make it seem far calmer than the action packed atmosphere created with short shot duration. As we are filming out of chronology and with different people at different times it is important that we keep track of every shot we get to ensure we don't miss out on any. If not it could have a negative impact on the rest of our sequence.

To encourage the drama genre that we are going for, I would like to include reaction shots to heighten the concept that these are real people with stories behind each of them. When targeting the audience and meeting their expectations, I will make sure that there are moments of fast paced shots and that there is always a character for them to engage with or identify with as many people who consume football films are interested/ play football. Additionally, I would like to have moments of stillness/ slow movement (like in the changing room) and moments of action to create juxtaposition.

Director: by Frederik Pape

So for our shoot day tomorrow i have been chosen to be the director for the project which means i've got all the fun responsibilities of this role, which will probably include have to organise the group and have everything hopefully running smoothly. I feel as director there isn’t much i can do apart from prepare myself to take on the responsibilities of the role.

As far as things i need to take with me this probably just includes things like shot list, story board, props, costume and all the camera equipment. As the director i'm sort of the most important person in the group as i'm basically managing so hopefully i can fulfil the responsibility. To be honest i have a feeling that tomorrow will be harder than i anticipate as i fear that the football boys will be i bit hard to organise and set up. As director to keep the sequence within the genre is to keep a level head and stick to the shot list and story boards, unless i feel strongly about adding new shots in.

Producer: by Daisy SewellKnight

On set I will be the producer/ art director because I'm good at organising people and taking control if I need to. My focus will be on time keeping and making sure we stay organised during the day, all the shots we want are filmed and the cast know what they're doing and where they need to be. To prepare for the shoot I have drawn out a story board to guid us through the day. I will also take our shot list and be making a list throughout the day of the shots we have taken. although a producer typically only handles the business side of the production, I will also be helping with the creative side.

there are many producers within in a film because there are many different areas within film making that require someone to overview their progress. However, on our shoot day, it will just be me. Although we will multi role the positions within our group so that we all get to try the different roles.

"a film producer is a person that initiates, coordinates, supervises and manages the creation and production of movies...They are involved throughout all phases of production from inception to completion, including coordination, supervision and control of finances, talent, crafts."

a producer is a very important role on set they:

find and develop material

budget and schedule

raise money

manage pre-production and production

hire cast and crew

marketing/distribution

manage post-production

I think a lot of our shoot will be challenging. I Think we will find keeping the cast listening and working with us quite hard and to prepare for that we have just made sure that we are prepared and I will make sure to communicate with them and make it clear what we want from them. I Think time management will be tricky because we're not sure how long these shots will take to get right and we only have the football pitch booked for a certain amount of time. To help with this the storyboard I made has clear examples of the shots we know we want.

Although our film is about football, we would say the the genre is a drama. Dramas need to exhibit real life, that be the characters, story, setting. The audience need to see character development and be able to connect emotionally with the characters. To make sure these genre conventions are portrayed in our sequence we have made sure to add shots where the audience can connect with the character such as shots of them in everyday life and some heartfelt dialogue. We also want this to be interlaced with a bit of comedy. The role of a producer is not very directly linked to targeting our audience and their expectations, but I will make sure we have the exciting shots we want in there and help make sure that the drama conventions are conveyed clearly to the audience.
