"The BBFC and Film Certificates"

What is the BBFC?

BBFC stands for The British Board of Film Classification. They are an independent, non- governmental, non-profit, co-regulatory body.

What do they do?
The BBFC classify commercials, all types of video works, films, trailer and advertisements. They ensure to consider that all of these are following the guidelines that they have applied to make sure that the content that is being provided is being directed towards the correct audience and that the content that has been created is following the classification guidelines for each age restricted category. They will make an assessment of each and every single form of cinema advertisement, feature films, trailers, public information films and charity campaigns and they will take full responsibility to ensure that these have all been classified.

what do they consider when awarding certificates?

- Context
- Theme
- Tone and Impact
- Dangerous behaviour
- Discrimination
- Drugs
- Language
- Nudity
- Sex
- Sexual violence and sexual threat
- Threat and Horror
- Violence

What a film can or cannot include for certain age categories

PG
Whats this means is that parental guidance is advised. If a film has been placed in this category it means that the film should not be unsettling for a child aged around eight or older to watch.

12A
Whats this means is that no one younger than 12 may enter the cinema unless they are accompanied by an adult. However, the adult should always check and make sure that they are happy with taking the child to film incase any the film contains any content that they would rather their child avoids.

15
What this means is that no one younger than the age of 15 may see a 15 rated film in cinema and they must not rent or buy any 15 rated video work. This rating is quite the step up from 12/12A as a lot of the classifications begin to ease slightly as the film is advised for a mature audience.

18
What this means is that no one younger than the age of 18 may see an 18 rated film in the cinema. 18 years old may rent or buy an 18 rated video work but no one younger. 18 rated video works have the eligibility to have material that would not be suitable for any one younger. The restrictions are less stringent as the audience is much more matured.

What certificate do I think my coursework groups idea should be given.

I feel as though my coursework group's idea could either be a 12A or a 15. The main reason as to why I say this is because there might be some dialogue that could potentially consist of some strong language. This is because whilst all the players are on the pitch we may find good reasoning to include such language to develop the atmosphere on the pitch to convey to the audience how intense the football match actually is.
