'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' Opening Scene analysis

From the very beginning of the opening scene it is clear that this movie is science fiction based. the entirety of this opening scene is all one shot. The effect that this has on the audience is that they are engaged with everything that is going on within the shot as they feel as though they are being brought along with everything that groot is experiencing in that scene. Yet what the director has decided to do in this opening sequence is introduce all of the character. The characters aren't introduced by what they are necessarily saying but for some of them it is how they are acting and fighting. It becomes visually apparent that baby groot is holding onto the lead for the monitors, giving the audience the interpretation that music is about to be queued in. Yet it is in this moment where you start to understand a little bit about the first character (baby groot). We are able to analyse that baby groot at the moment is slightly useless. Not only because he isn't involved with the fighting going on behind him but because of the fact that he even slightly struggled to connect the male and female ends of the cords together. As the tracking shot follows baby groot you are sooner or later introduced to each and every one of the characters that are fighting in the background.

The method that they have used to film this entire scene is placing a camera either on a dolly or on a track so that they were able to gain a tracking shot that follows baby groot all around the science fiction set that they have created with green screening and CGI effects. However, for the characters to be able to leave the frame in certain ways or to be flying around in the background it would most likely be that they were wearing harnesses so that they could attach themselves to wires so that their movement could be controlled in the green screen set to fit exactly what the director wanted the to be doing in the backgroudn baby groot.

This is a controversial point because of the music that is being played as baby groot eventually plugs in the two cables. The reason for this is because some people might say that the music is contrapuntal to what is going on behind baby groot. However, knowing Peter Quill from the previous guardians of the galaxy. He is the kind of guy to bring along his music to a fight. In the background you can hear all sorts of sound effects ranging from the space monster that they are trying to kill to the sound of sci-fi guns being fired. However, even though all of the fighting that is going on behind baby groot is not in focus. You can still see enough to acknowledge the fact that the sound of gun fire is in fact parallel with all of the gunfire that can see in the background along with any of the special effects going on.

As a sixteen year old I recommend this movie to anyone who has an interest in movies with great sound tracks, amazing science fiction visuals, comedy and action. But to truly understand this film i recommend watching the first one.
