'Sexy Beast' analysis

 The opening scene begins with a still framed shot pointing towards the sun. In this shot alone you can see that there are no clouds in sight showing us that the setting that this scene is based in has a warm climate. Sound wise there has most likely been non diegetic sounds of crickets and the occasional birds added in the post production to emphasise the setting that this shot is in but also to make it appear as though he can hear these sounds as-well . As the shot continues dialogue is brought in. This shows the audience that there is a character which is shortly presented by a birds eye view establishing what appears to be the main character lying in a sun chair for a long duration . However, the character that is being presented has a very thick cockney accent. This comes across as unusual due to the fact that his accent represents that he is from a working class background meaning that because of the setting he is in. There is a high possibility that he is involved with crime.

The shot  then cuts to a tracking shot with a long duration from the characters right hand side in which a fairly up beat song is played. Which then cuts upon movement/action to his other side presenting the audience with a second character (young boy). The main character can be seen taking up the majority of the left hand side of the frame whilst the young boy is only occupying the bottom left and side of the frame. The audiences attention is easily drawn from the main character as he is soon to be facing the young boy making the audiences attention move from the left hand side of the frame to left not only establishing the presence of the second character but also slightly establishing more of the setting that this scene is based in. This is soon followed up by short duration close up matching the dialogue in conversation showing the facial expressions of both of the character.For example, slight confusion int eh young boys face and the stubbornness of the main characters face. However, it is clear to see that there is most definitely some sort of banter between the two of them as young boy clearly can make fun of the instructions that the main character is trying to give him. 

As the main character decides to proceed with whatever it was exactly that he was doing. The camera cuts once again upon his actions to a close up of him grabbing his iced towel to then repeat once again the previous birds eye view shot of him lying back down in the sun chair. The use of using the same birds eye view camera angle shows that he is going back into the same position. However, as soon as the birds eye view changes to a different angle. The main character is presented on the left hand side of the frame drawing the audience towards the graphic inside of the swimming pool. This graphic of two love hearts represents a possibility of there being a possible woman which is most likely to appear later on after the opening scene. Yet, the fact that there are these two hearts in the pool shows that the house that he is currently accommodating himself too is most likely owned by this woman. 

The birds eye view is later on cut to a long distance shot establishing the scenery and the location giving the audience a view of the entire household. However, the duration of this shot is really short, quickly leading on to a close up to the main character’s face in which it is showing off the expensive accessories that the main character is wearing. This represents that the character has made some form of social mobility into a higher paying lifestyle. As the dialogue between him and the young boy ends the camera switches to another tracking shot in which the title of the movie is presented. The camera is stationary but tracks his movements as he begins to walk towards the pool and admire the setting that he is. This could possible correlate with the fact that he does not live there. Primarily, due the fact that someone who owns the place would most likely be familiar with where they are living and would consider everything going on around the house(eg.nature) to be normal. You can clearly see this because of the long shot duration allowing us to see the character every movement and everywhere that he is looking. However, in a way this can come across very suspicious.This is because of the fact that you get can get a slight sense that there is a possibility that someone is looking for him or that something is bound to happen to him sometime soon.
